About Us

Our Motto:  "Changing lives through Ocean Adventure"

Our Mission Statement:  "Tall Ships Bermuda works to provide opportunities for young people from Bermuda to become trainees on sail training vessels participating in races and festivals in Europe and North America.  We believe that sail training is beneficial for the well-rounded development of youth of Bermuda."

Our Board of Directors.... are listed on the left of this page.  Please click each name to learn more about them.

Our Goals:

a) To provide opportunities for young people who are resident in Bermuda to participate in an international sail training experience;
b) To provide financial support for sail training on an as-needed basis;
c) To give young people in Bermuda an opportunity to learn more about the Island's cultural and historical roots via the world of ships and sailing.

Our Future:  Bermuda has a rich maritime history and Tall Ships Bermuda supports sail training as an enriching and enjoyable adventure that positively strengthens the growth and development of young people which, in turn, strengthens our community.  It is no wonder then that the challenges our young people face, and the friendships they gain on board a Tall Ship, prepares and develops them into citizens who are ready for this new global environment.

Tall Ships Bermuda prides itself on offering sail training (and sponsorship) to young people in Bermuda, aged 15 - 25 years, who may not normally fit the mold of the traditional sailor.

The environment on a Tall Ship at sea encourages young people to step out of their physical and emotional comfort zones.  They gain self-confidence, learn acceptance of personal responsibility and discover how to work as a team.  Working with different nationalities, ethnicities and lifestyles and learning to communicate with those whose first language is other than English also fosters new skills, self-esteem and lasting friendships.

Sail training is not designed or geared towards privileged 'yachting' types.  It is geared towards giving opportunities to young people who may have limited-to-no sailing experiences; those who may be at risk or who are facing other personal and social challenges on land - it teaches them to enjoy the art of cooperation, dedication and decision-making needed to get a ship safely from one location to another.

Tall Ships Bermuda encourages interested young people to raise approximately 25% of their total trainee costs and, afterwards, participants are also encouraged to give back to the Bermuda community through time with the Bermuda Sloop Foundation or by sharing their experiences with their peers.

Since 2000, Tall Ships Bermuda/Sail Training Bermuda has placed more than 200 young people on sail training ships.  Some of these young people continue to be actively involved with Tall Ships Bermuda and assist with our presentations to encourage other young people to take advantage of the sail training adventures that we offer.
