SHIP'S LIAISON OFFICERS

Ship's Liaison Officers will be important and essential volunteers whose contributions will be vital to ensuring the success of Tall Ships 2009.  A description of this volunteer position and its criteria and responsibilities are included below.  While this will be a time consuming position, the potential to greatly assist our foreign visitors and the personal satisfaction to be derived can be enormous.  If you feel you have the abilities, requisite local knowledge, time and temperament to serve as a Ship's Liaison Officer, we strongly encourage you to volunteer and be a part of this historic event.

 

SHIP'S LIAISON OFFICER CRITERIA

We are seeking mature, confident individuals, age twenty-one and over, who know the ins and outs of Bermuda and who will feel comfortable dealing with ship's captains, officers and crew, as well as local business people and officials.

 

 

Volunteers for Ship's Liaison Officers should:

Be enthusiastic, well motivated and willing to work very long hours, sometimes under significant pressure
Have an empathy with young people and understand (at least conceptually) the role of being a member of a crew, so you can welcome them, assist them and look after their vessel
Have detailed, local knowledge of the facilities of the port, Hamilton and Bermuda
Have the foresight and training to anticipate the requirements of a ship’s Captain and his/her crew
   
   
 

Volunteers for Ship's Liaison Officers need to be:

Diplomatic and polite; punctual, conscientious and hard working
Reliable and able to commit to the time required to attend all the pre-event meetings, and dedicate their time completely to the ship during the event
   
   
 

SHIP'S LIAISON OFFICER'S RESPONSIBILITIES

At times, you will act as a ship's agent, assisting the captain and crew to find, and order, supplies and provisions and to put them in contact with mechanics, travel agents and medical personnel, when needed.  At other times, you will act as a friend and advisor to help the captain and crew learn about, and enjoy, Bermuda and its hospitality.

   
   
  Your role as liaison is critical to:
Ensuring that the ships crews are informed about, and fully participate in and enjoy, the shore-based activities organized for them, such as the sports programs, cultural visits, crew parade, prize-giving, crew party, ship's officers party and the Captain's dinners
   
   
  Your role as liaison will require you to:
Arrange for, and oversee, the delivery of mail to your ship
Assist with making transportation arrangements for crews to attend activities
Inform the Captain and Ship's Officers about:

     •  Security and Emergency Procedures within the fleet berthing area
     •  Ships Chandlers and other vendors of ship supplies (gas, fuel, water, electric)

Help to organize repairs to vessels
Organize rubbish collection
Help to order food stores and other supplies and provisions
Inform the crew about:

     •  Money exchange, Post Office
     •  Public transportation schedules and routes
     •  Health and Medical services and Dentists
     •  Laundry facilities
     •  Bath, shower and toilet facilities
